Photoshop CS4 Tutorial

How to create actions and automate them in photoshop

This tutorial will teach you how to complete the same actions such as converting to grayscale and resizing to multiple photoshop files.

Skill level: Intermediate

  1. Step 1: Place all of the photos that will undergo the same actions into the same folder. This folder should be separate from other working folders.
  2. Step 2: Use the Actions window to create a new actions folder by clicking on the tiny folder at the bottom of the panel. Name this folder. Click on the tiny folded piece of paper icon to create a new actions set. Name this set and hit record. Notice that the red dot at the bottom of the panel will be highlighted and your actions are being recorded.
  3. Step 3: Now you should complete only actions that you plan on doing to the entire set. For this set, the photos are being converted to grayscale as well as resizing the image to 72 dpi for the web. As you complete actions you will notice that they are recorded in the actions panel. Hit the “stop” button when you have finished (it is to the left of the red record button at the bottom of the panel). You can close this image without saving the changes.
  4. Step 4: You will now apply these actions to the entire folder by going to File > Automate > Batch. A dialogue will pop up and you must select the set folder and action that you created in the beginning. The source for the batch will be the folder that you created with all of the images. Hit “OK” and watch your photos go through the actions.

When the actions have completed through the entire folder your images will be open and ready for more specific editing. You can also add “save” and “close” actions to your action set. Experiment with other actions, as you can get very complex with actions that you add to files. It can become a great time saver on many projects.
